Casual AV Crew

Molendinar, QLD, Australia

Christmas carols one week, a rock band the next.

Captivate AV is a Gold Coast audiovisual company. We supply and operate the audio, lighting, video, LED and staging behind live events right across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales — and we are building out our casual crew list for the season ahead.

No two calls look the same. One week it is a line array and a choir mic split for Christmas carols in a park. The next it is stage patch and monitors for a rock band, a gala dinner, a school production, a conference, a product launch, an awards night, a festival stage or an LED wall for a trade show. Some jobs are a van, two crew and a pair of speakers. Others are a full truck, a twelve hour bump‑in and a crew of twenty.

If you can wind a cable properly, turn up on time and keep your head when the run sheet slips, we want to hear from you.

Who we are after

  • Experienced crew with real depth in one area — audio, lighting, video, rigging or networking.
  • Generalists who can turn their hand to most things on a show site.
  • Newer crew with the right attitude who want to learn from experienced operators.

What the work looks like

Most calls are a bump‑in, a show and a bump‑out. You get a call sheet with a start time, a site, a crew chief and a rough finish. What happens in between depends on the job.

Bump‑in and bump‑out

  • Unloading trucks and vans, carting cases and moving gear on site — up ramps, through venues and into places gear was never meant to go.
  • Building PA, lighting rigs, screens, staging and drape, and running power and data to all of it.
  • Cable runs that are safe and tidy: dressed to the truss, taped or matted where people walk, labelled where it matters.
  • A clean pack at the end. Gear back in the right case, cables wound properly, nothing left behind. The pack is as much a part of the job as the build.

Audio

  • PA build — ground stacks and flown line arrays, subs, delays and front fills.
  • Stage setup: patch and looms, mic kits, DI boxes, stands, wedges and IEMs, backline and line checks.
  • Operating FOH or monitors on smaller shows, or working to an engineer on the bigger ones.
  • Troubleshooting under time pressure — hum and noise, RF dropouts, dead lines, feedback, a channel that worked ten minutes ago.

Lighting

  • Fixture prep and hang, focus and patch, addressing and data runs.
  • Desk operation — busking a band, running cues for an awards night, or handing a tested rig over to a visiting op.
  • Power distribution and load management, and keeping it all within what the venue can actually give you.

Video

  • LED wall build — panels and frames, data and power mapping, processing and calibration.
  • Cameras, tripods and PTZs, and all the cabling behind them.
  • Vision switching and control, content playback, presenter laptops and comfort monitors.
  • Record and stream feeds where the client wants the show to travel further than the room.

Rigging

  • Flying PA and lighting — truss, motors, bumpers, slings and shackles, working to a qualified rigger.
  • Ground support, goal posts, banner rigs and outdoor truss structures.
  • Working at heights off ladders, EWPs and scaff where you hold the ticket for it.

Networking and control

  • Dante and audio over IP, Art‑Net and sACN, video over IP.
  • Switches, VLANs and clocking — getting a show network stable and staying that way through doors.
  • Control systems, touch panels and show comms.

On the floor

  • Show calls — standing by on a fader, a follow spot, a mic run, a comms position or a scene change.
  • Looking after clients, artists, presenters and venue staff, calmly and professionally, on a day that is not going to plan.
  • Keeping the site safe: exclusion zones, heights, lifting, power and public egress.

What you will need

  • Reliable transport to site across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and regional SEQ.
  • A reasonable level of fitness. This is physical work, often outdoors and often at odd hours.
  • Availability for nights, weekends and public holidays — that is when events happen.
  • Blacks and safety footwear, and the ability to work to a run sheet without being chased.
  • Tickets are highly regarded but not essential: White Card, Blue Card, Working at Heights, EWP, rigging, forklift, LR/MR/HR licence, first aid, test and tag.

What we offer

  • Casual hourly rates based on your experience and tickets.
  • Genuine variety — corporate, live music, community, education and large format LED.
  • Good kit, properly maintained: NEXO, L‑Acoustics, DiGiCo, grandMA, ChamSys, Absen and Pixelhue.
  • A busy season with steady work through the October to December peak.
  • Training, ticket support and a real path to more responsibility — several of our full‑time crew started on the casual list.

How to apply

Fill in the form below, including the skills matrix. Rate yourself honestly — there are no wrong answers, and it means we can put you on the jobs that suit you rather than the ones that do not. A resume helps, but a short note about the shows you have worked on is just as useful.
